Cybercrime registers sharp decline amid Covid-19 lockdown

Data analysis of complaints at the cybercrime wing (CCW) unveiled a substantial decline in the rate of online financial crimes in Pakistan in spite of the extensive internet services as people mostly remained indoors.
Key findings
With direction from the Prime Minister the FIA CCW had taken stringent steps to mitigate risk on financial crimes. reports revealed a 50% decrease during lockdown. in 2019 56,000 cybercrime complaints were reported. in 2020, before lockdown Mar 2020 total of 923 complaints (154 banking, 130 website fraud, 497 mobile banking, 141 media) during lockdown, total of 488 complaints (89 online banking, 70 website, 273 mobile banking, 50 social media). The FIA had accelerated its efforts to sharing information of underlying threats & ploys used by criminals. Also had an awareness campaign, flashed on both social media and broadcast media.
